Thomas Brezing – Visual Artist

Thomas Brezing is an artist who works in installation, painting, performance, sound and video. He was born in Germany in 1969 and moved to Ireland in the early 1990’s to commit himself full-time to his art practice. He has since exhibited widely in Ireland and also in Germany, Wales, Finland and Belgium. In his work Thomas examines the relationship between living beings and the environment. He raises questions about the value ascribed to material possessions and about worthlessness, decay and renewal. He asks how our accelerated speed of life is affecting our surroundings and how nature reacts to our increasingly man-made, physical world.

Thomas’ solo shows include Lapua Art Museum, Finland (with Klaus Effern, 2016), Linenhall Arts Centre, Mayo (2015), Highlanes Municipal Gallery Drogheda (2011), The Lab, Dublin (2007), Ashford Gallery, Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin (2005) & four solo shows with the Molesworth Gallery, Dublin. Group shows include Lapua Art Museum, Finland (2012) & ‘Altered Images’ at the Crawford Art Gallery Cork and Irish Museum Of Modern Art, Dublin 2010/11. Brezing has been the recipient of Arts Council Awards, the Fingal Artists Support Scheme, and his work is included in the collections of the National Portrait Collection Ireland, Lapua Art Museum Collection Finland, Highlanes Municipal Art Gallery, Mayo County Council, Contemporary Irish Art Society, Boyle Civic Collection and the Office of Public Works.

Thomas’ long-term project – The Carpet Man was created in 2011.
