Balbriggan Tidy Towns committee has received a shot in the arm with the announcement that the local Chamber of Commerce has decided to give its full backing to the committee in an effort to be competitive this year. President of Balbriggan Chamber, Joe English said, “We are delighted that the Tidy Towns are back in Balbriggan and we will give them all the support they need. Retailers will get behind them and floral displays will be in evidence throughout the town,” he said. A clearly delighted Tidy Towns committee member, Zoe Nelson told the County Leader, “This is the beginning of a three year plan for the town to bring it to world class standard and our plan is to make Balbriggan an inspiring place to live in and do business in,” she said. Brian Carrick, Area Manager of sponsors SuperValu is delighted to be involved with the committee. He said, “We recognises the contribution Tidy Towns makes to community life and as sponsors, we, and the committee are the perfect fit as we both celebrate the achievement of real people making a real difference to their community.” he said. Meanwhile, work has already begun with the establishment of two weekly work groups undertaking activities throughout the town, one operating on Saturday mornings between 11am and 1pm and the other on Monday evenings between 7pm and 9pm. The Saturday group has been concentrating on the lay-by outside St Molaga’s National School and after successfully clearing all the weeds and rubbish and pruning the shrubs they have now planted a further six trees. This group have also undertaken a project over the last number of weeks to clear the Bracken river all the way through the town and up to the harbour. The Monday evening work team is concentrating on the beach area of the town, starting at the Viaduct and working up to the Martello tower car park. Their project will last all summer and each week. |
