Streetscape Initiative
The visual condition of the Main Street in Balbriggan was recognised by the Chamber members as being in need of improvement. It was decided to form a sub-committee, dedicated to looking at ideas where improvement could be found. It was important to wait until the Urban Improvement Scheme (new footpaths, lampposts etc.) had been completed before carrying out a study.
Local businessman, David Pratt kindly commissioned his Consultants to provide the Chamber with a presentation of the existing streetscapes in Balbriggan from Convent Lane to the Square (existing and proposed). The proposed drawings show the above ground floor levels of each premises, painted in contrasting colours to give a fresh identity to each premises and to create a better ‘retail street environment’. New tree planting was also proposed.

A DVD showing the existing condition of Balbriggan was commissioned. It was viewed by Balbriggan Town Council and Fingal County Council representatives. The large ‘montage’ showing the streetscape was then tabled and all agreed that it would make a huge difference to the aesthetics along the Main Street and henceforth improve the retail experience for the people of Balbriggan.
Fingal County Council representatives had previously stated they were fully behind the project and offered assistance where possible.
The international paint manufacturer, Dulux came on on board and kindly sponsored the supply of the paints to be used in the scheme. The Chamber was delighted to be informed that painting would commence on a number of buildings in the ‘pilot area’ in mid-March 2011.
This was yet another example of how good ideas can be ‘brought to fruition’ through the business community and others working together.
